Isolation Gallery and Studio is located in the Eastwood mixed residential and industrial neighborhood. Eastwood is one of the two neighborhoods developed by William Wilson who also established the Woodland Heights, or as they are now called simply the Heights. As a result, Eastwood buildings share a number of characteristics that are found in the Heights, except that Eastwood also lies not too far from the Ship Channel and also reflects an industrial mix of old factories and the Maximus Coffee Group Tower located on Harrisburg Avenue.
Isolation Gallery and Studio is located two blocks south of Harrisburg Avenue at the corner of Eastwood and Walker, just across the railroad tracks. The structures within which Isolation Gallery and Studio are located were very recently (August, 2008) acquired by Jim and Laura Carter. The participation of Isolation Gallery and Studio in the Art Crawl will be the first art exhbiiton and event in the new Gallery/Studio.
The building was built in 1936 and was one of the first built in the then new neighborhood on the East side. Dora Lantrip School, built in about 1920, and the large, Cathedral-like Episcopal Church that is across the street from the school are worth a quick trip to see, since each represent one of the earliest schools and churches in Houston, respectively. The original Tellepsen home built by the well known Tellepsen family is also nearby. At one time Howard Hughes also lived in the neighborhood.
The artists participating at the Isolation Gallery and Studio are rather well known in Houston and beyond. Among other honors, Keith Hollingsworth was, a few years ago, the recipient of the first prize at the Lawndale Annual Show, and his art can be found in numerous collections. Tony Shipp is the Chair of the Art Department at Sam Houston State University and is both a sculptor, which he teaches at SHSU, and a photographer, which is what he will be exhibiting during the Art Crawl. Dune Micheli Patten has exhibited nationally and internationally. His works have made their way into private collections nationally and internationally as well in addition to major local collections. Elizabeth Cencini is a native Houstonian and has studied art extensively in various locations in Florence, Italy. Dune and Elizabeth have shown in numerous exhibitions all around Houston and are two of the most active members of the Houston Arts Community.
Jim and Laura Carter are the owners of the Gallery/Studio and are thrilled to be a part of Art Crawl, one of the major artistic events on the Houston Arts Calendar. They are hopeful that even though Isolation Gallery and Studio is not located directly in the downtown warehouse district that patrons of the Art Crawl will visit the Gallery as they travel from Downtown to the Box 13 Location housing another group of Houston Artists further down Harrisburg on the east end.
